Discovering Dunnellon Charm

Nestled between Ocala and Florida’s Gulf Coast, Dunnellon is a quiet city that captivates visitors with its natural beauty, historic charm, and a relaxed atmosphere. Located in Marion County and sitting at the junction of two contrasting rivers, this hidden gem is often overshadowed by its more prominent neighbors, but those who take the time to explore Dunnellon are rewarded with a unique blend of outdoor adventures, small-town hospitality, and rich history.

Dunnellon's history dates back to the late 19th century when phosphate mining brought prosperity to the area. The discovery of phosphate deposits in the Withlacoochee River led to the establishment of the Dunnellon Phosphate Company in 1887. The mining boom attracted settlers, and the town of Dunnellon was officially incorporated in 1891. While the phosphate industry eventually declined, the town's history is still visible in its well-preserved historic district.

One of the standout features of Dunnellon is its proximity to some of Florida's most stunning natural attractions. The Rainbow River, a crystal-clear spring-fed river, flows east through the city and is a popular destination for tubing, kayaking, and snorkeling. The river's vibrant hues and abundant wildlife make it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts. Nearby, one of Florida’s largest springs resides in Rainbow Springs State Park. With more than 1,400 acres, the park features walking trails that wind through lush landscapes, offering glimpses of native flora and fauna. The historic gardens and waterfalls, remnants of the old tourist attraction, add a touch of nostalgia to the park. It has picnic areas, a campground, and the opportunity to explore the remains of the historic phosphate mining operations.

Dunnellon provides ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts to connect with nature. With numerous parks, trails, and waterways, like the swamp-fed Withlachoochee River which extends west and southeast, residents and visitors alike can enjoy activities such as bird watching, fishing, and boating. The Withlacoochee State Trail, one of Florida's longest paved rail-trails, winds through the area, providing a scenic route for walking, jogging, cycling, and even horseback riding.

Dunnellon's historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a testament to the town's rich history. Visitors can stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue and explore well-preserved buildings that showcase the architectural styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
